Experience-based expertise

The power of experience

This elective is specifically designed for you if you want to translate your own profound life experiences into professional expertise.

Do you have valuable life experience and want to use it to support others? In our Experience-Based Expertise program, you'll develop the professional skills to support people in healthcare and social services, for example, in recovery, housing, work, or education. Even if your background is in gastrointestinal or liver care (GI), this program offers ample opportunity to utilize your unique knowledge and empathy. This way, you'll become a bridge between experiences and professional guidance.

Life experience can be thought of as experiences with exclusion mechanisms due to disruptive events such as:

  • trauma
  • mental and/or addiction problems
  • difficult living conditions
  • migration history
  • generational poverty
  • histories of emotional misunderstanding/neglect.

You will learn this

With your experiences, you have the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to the well-being and recovery of others. In this program, you'll learn how to approach this effectively and the aspects involved.

Practical experience is an essential part of this program, where you'll learn the specific skills and nuances of the profession through hands-on experience. This way, we optimally prepare you for a meaningful future.

As an expert by experience, you work in healthcare and/or the social sector, where you support people facing various life challenges. As an expert by experience, you are able to empathize with the challenges of others. You offer support in formulating personal goals and empower individuals to take control. Your responsibilities include providing guidance, collaborating with a team, advising based on your own experience, and maintaining contact with family and other care providers.

After completing the training program, you can work as an expert by experience in the social domain. You can work at residential, work, educational, or leisure institutions. Clients may have one or more (chronic) mental health issues, an addiction, are homeless, or have psychosocial or behavioral problems.

Duration

The program consists of 24 six-hour sessions, consisting of four hours of theory and two hours of coaching. For the first ten weeks, there will be a weekly meeting at the school, after which you will attend classes biweekly. In between, you will work on practical assignments, allowing you to immediately put what you've learned into practice!

In addition to the 24 meetings, you should expect to spend 6 to 8 hours of self-study per week.

Preliminary training

Your workplace must be recognised for Social Care if you wish to continue studying for the full Social Care diploma.

If you only choose the elective component, you must be able to perform and examine the work processes in the workplace. Accreditation for Social Care is not required in that case.

An experienced work supervisor must be present at your workplace. If not, we will discuss what is needed to ensure development in the workplace. This could, for example, take the form of workplace support provided by the training program.
