As a marketing and communications specialist, you know exactly how to convince, surprise, and engage customers. This program prepares you for a marketing and communications role focused on the business market.

Do you want to make marketing and communications your career? Do you want to start your own business or put the company you work for in the spotlight? Then this is the program for you!

As a marketing & communications specialist, you have many career options. You could, for example, work in the marketing or communications department of a store, a municipality, or a theater. Communication skills are important, and you'll hone your presentation skills. 

De training to become a marketing & communication specialist at Summa is the only program in the Netherlands with its own film and photography studio. This studio features green screens, an autocue, and camera drones, among other equipment.  

You're creative! Speaking and writing come naturally to you. You enjoy photo and video editing and are proud of your final product. Marketing has increasingly become an online profession. With us, you'll learn how to use tools to increase your online visibility and work with websites and social media.

If you'd like to continue your studies, you can, of course. This program is excellent preparation for many higher professional education (HBO) or AD programs. For example, you could progress to Speco or Commercial Economics. 

Within the program, you can choose from a wide variety of electives. Entrepreneurship, for example, if your dream is to start your own business after graduation. Summa offers a huge range of electives; see further down this page. We believe it's important that you have extensive practical experience. That's why we have strong relationships with companies for whom you'll also carry out real-world assignments. 

In short: with everything you learn and experience with us, you can find work, start your own business or make a strong start in higher professional education.

What are you becoming?

As a marketing & communications specialist, you have many career options. For example, you could work in the marketing or communications department of a store, a municipality, or a theater.

What does your education look like?

In the first year, you'll immediately begin working on exciting projects and take general courses that expand your marketing and communication knowledge. In years 1 and 2, you'll combine school and internships, gaining practical experience. Did you know you can even do your internship abroad?

In the second year, you'll work with fellow students to start a real-world mini-business, securing and carrying out practical assignments. Examples of assignments include maintaining a company's social media presence or reaching a new target audience for a company. This will put everything you've learned so far into practice.

In the third year you start with six months of school and complete the course with a graduation internship.

The Education and Examination Regulations (OER) of a course specify what you will be doing in which period, how much time is spent on this and an overview of the exams that will be taken. Find the OER for your course here.

The statutory tuition fee for the 2026-2027 school year is €1.511. Check DUO.nl for possible student financing.

You'll also choose one or more electives to broaden or deepen your knowledge, such as entrepreneurship, general economics, or International I. What prior education do you need?

For the vocational training (level 3) and middle management training (level 4) you must meet one of the following conditions:

  • You have a diploma in pre-vocational secondary education (VMBO) with a pre-vocational secondary education (VMBO) track, a theoretical pre-vocational secondary education (VMBO) track, or a mixed pre-vocational secondary education (VMBO) track.
  • You have an (older) diploma from lbo, vbo, mavo or mavo-vbo.
  • You have a basic vocational training diploma (level 2) or a diploma from another vocational training course (level 3).
  • You have proof that you successfully completed the first three years of pre-university or senior general secondary education (havo) or pre-university education (vwo). Or you have another diploma or certificate recognized by the government.

Additionally

It is important that you have had subjects from the Economics sector in your package.

You will be invited for a personal interview where we will determine whether this course is a good fit for you.

From pre-university secondary education (havo), pre-university education (vwo) or higher professional education (hbo): enter in the 2nd or 3rd year

Are you in year 4 or 5 of pre-university secondary education (HAVO), do you have a HAVO or VWO diploma, or are you coming from a university of applied sciences (HBO)? Then you may be eligible for the second or third year. During a personal interview, we'll determine your eligibility and the duration of your program.
