A team from Summa Automotive & Smart Mobility in Helmond became Dutch Hydrogen Challenge Champions in Groningen on Friday, May 13th. This earned the team of six vocational students a ticket to the World Championship. Three teams from Summa College participated in the race.

Team Summa Racing 3 won the National Championship by completing an impressive 881 laps in a hydrogen car in six hours. The runner-up, from Alfa College, which was playing a home game, crossed the finish line after 2 laps. Another team from that vocational college took silver with just one lap less.

Special achievement

"The championship is a reward for the hard work of our students," says instructor Ronald van Oorschot. "It's a fantastic achievement. A remarkable detail: the race car was driven for a full six hours by a single driver: student Tom Engelen." Normally, the drivers alternate periodically.

Summa teams in top 5

The other two teams from Summa College also scored in the top: Summa Racing 2 finished fourth with 790 laps, while Summa Racing 1 also finished fifth with 790 laps.

World Championship

The top two teams from the Dutch Hydrogen Challenge Championship will compete in the World Championship in Assen on June 1th. During that competition, dozens of teams from around the world will vie for a place on the podium.

Pitstop

Students participated in the race with radio-controlled, scale models of hydrogen-powered race cars. During the race, the cars, just like in Formula 1, must make regular pit stops to change tires or refuel with hydrogen.
