Promising start BOTH: 30 participants through a trajectory towards a job or training in healthcare and welfare

Proud participants in the new orientation program for care and welfare (ZOWEL), together with their teachers and supervisors.

The new orientation program for healthcare and welfare (ZOWEL) has been successfully running in the Southeast Brabant region since December 2025. Around 30 participants can move on to a follow-up program that leads to training, a work placement, or a job. The program offers people without training or experience the opportunity to get acquainted with the work environment, discover their talents, and remove barriers (such as language skills or a lack of a diploma). In this way, the program opens doors for interested job seekers and helps organizations find new colleagues.

ZOWEL is a regional collaboration between the municipality, the UWV (Employee Insurance Agency), Ergon, and partners from Werkcentrum Zuidoost-Brabant, Transvorm, Summa, and 18 healthcare and welfare organizations in the region. This joining of forces gives people the opportunity for a new future in healthcare and welfare and helps combat staff shortages in the sector.

Great interest

In the first few weeks, Summa spoke with over 100 interested parties to determine their suitability and opportunities. Summa assessed which support and learning format best suited them. From this, two groups of 34 participants were formed: (1) people with diverse backgrounds and (2) people with one clear common ground: the desire to make a difference in healthcare or social welfare. Due to the high level of enthusiasm, a waiting list has now been created for the next round.

Lessons, practical experience and introduction to the sector

Participants will spend two half-days a week for eight weeks taking classes on healthcare and well-being, language and culture, and practical skills. They will also visit various organizations to gain a good and honest understanding of the work and to determine if the sector is a good fit for them. At the beginning of this year, they will be matched with suitable vacancies and work placements.

The organizations involved are currently busy with placement and placement. In the coming period, it will become clear how many participants will actually enter training or employment.
