Sustainable wood recycling at Summa Wonen & Design
Already collected 2500 kilos of wood and saved 1965 kilos of CO2
At Summa Wonen & Design, craftsmanship and responsibility are key. That's why we partner with Wood Loop to sustainably recycle wood waste from practical classes. A logical step for a program that increasingly integrates sustainability into its curriculum.
The Netherlands aims to be fully circular by 2050. This means minimal waste and maximum reuse of materials. But such a change doesn't start with large companies or policymakers. It starts with you. With students who will soon make the difference, emphasizes instructor Joris van der Zanden.
Good craftsmanship = sustainable work
In our Living & Design classes, students work with wood every day. This process results in residual materials. We now collect this wood separately, without complicated systems. Wood Loop handles the logistics and recycles it into particleboard.
"A smart and accessible way to integrate sustainability into the curriculum," explains instructor Patrick Daniels. "We teach students not only how to make furniture, but also how to use materials responsibly. This way, they'll actively contribute to a more sustainable world. That's part of good craftsmanship."
Result: 2500 kilos of wood, 1965 kilos of CO₂ saved
In less than four months, our students have already collected over 2500 kilos of wood, saving almost 2000 kilos of CO₂. "Every month, we receive a summary of the results. That makes it tangible and motivating for the students," says Van der Zanden enthusiastically.
Circular together
Thanks to the partnership with Wood Loop, we are now truly part of the circular wood supply chain. Students see firsthand how sustainability works in practice. They learn about raw material flows, logistics, and materials management – knowledge that is becoming increasingly important in the field.
"We want students to experience that waste isn't the end point, but the beginning of something new," says Daniels. "We're happy to plant that seed in education."
