Kees-Jan left certainty behind and took a leap into the unknown

July 04, 2025

Despite a stable home life, Kees-Jan was itching to go back to school. "With a level 2 and level 3 security diploma, I worked for the Ministry of Defence for years. But I wanted a new position that required a level 4 qualification. I was fully committed to the profession, had a stable income, and a family to support. Nevertheless, I decided to take the plunge and look for a suitable training program." Kees-Jan now works as a teacher at Summa College. This is his story.

Kees-Jan Scheel (45) has lived in the hilly Limburg region for many years, a stone's throw from Landgraaf. Due to a combination of circumstances, Kees-Jan ended up at the Team/department/project management training (LTAP) at Summa College. Looking at where he is now, he hasn't regretted his choice for a moment.
A colleague initially suggested a program in Central Limburg. Due to a lack of applications, it was cancelled. But I wasn't going to be discouraged and started looking for alternatives. I came across Summa College, where I saw that you can complete the level 4 vocational training program in just one year. I called the contact person, and we clicked right away. That's when I knew I was in the right place.

Unique training

The LTAP program at Summa College had a unique aspect that convinced Kees-Jan and made the leap easier. "If you take the LTAP program, you'll have a full MBO level 4 diploma within a year. That's why I decided to come to Eindhoven for this, despite the travel time. And that's when I entered the world of Summa. The first impression was good, the time flew by, and my experience was so positive that I didn't want to leave."

I drive past two schools to work for Summa College

Kees-Jan felt it was time for a change. He was so enthusiastic about the program, the atmosphere, and the people that he decided to apply for the Private Security instructor position at Summa College. He's currently working on his PDG (Professional Security Certificate) and is enjoying every second of it. And the long commute? Summa College takes that into account.
I drive past two schools to work for Summa College. Yet, I do it with love and pleasure every workday. The contact with my teachers made me want to become a teacher myself.
But isn't it a shame to switch careers right after a new degree? Kees-Jan sees it differently. What he learned at LTAP can be applied directly as a teacher. "As a teacher, you also take on a leadership role. For example, I still use skills from my training in the classroom. As a manager, you're responsible for the well-being and retention of a lot of people, whether they're students or staff. It was the perfect stepping stone to enter a new phase in life."

Learn at your own pace

At Summa College, there's plenty of room for personalized learning. This means you can accelerate your studies whenever possible, even with a one-year program. "Everyone goes at their own pace. This gives you the freedom to register for exams earlier. If you feel ready, you don't have to wait until May or June. That flexibility was especially helpful considering my home situation. I finished my exams quickly, which gave me more time for my family, but I still earned my level 4 diploma."

Highly recommended

Looking for a level 4 vocational education (MBO) program? Then choose the LTAP. It's a program with broad application. You can work as a manager at Jumbo supermarkets, the Ministry of Defence, or wherever your interests lie. This program is also worth considering if you're considering higher professional education (HBO) or the next step in your career. Take that leap of faith. I can promise you it's worth it. The LTAP will open doors for you.
