Together against loneliness: the warm heart of Summa in the Neighborhood

July 04, 2025

In the dark days leading up to Christmas, Summa in de Buurt, an initiative of Summa Zorg & Welzijn, has a special and heartwarming activity planned. Today, participants from the neighborhood will work with students to prepare a three-course Christmas dinner. This activity is not only about delicious food, but also about social engagement, warmth, and a sense of community.

Looking for each other

The Christmas dinner attendees are primarily seniors who feel lonely, have a small social circle, or enjoy staying active. One of them is Nico (70), an enthusiastic local resident who's happy to volunteer to help out with the activities when needed. "I especially enjoy chatting with younger people here. I don't like being surrounded by seniors all day. I never miss an activity, and certainly not Christmas dinner," says Nico with a smile.

Most beautiful activity

Nico has always been very active. After 40 years of service, he was ready to retire and started looking for something to fill his days. "One day, I saw a flyer in the mailbox for Summa in de Buurt. That was perfect for me. Today, one of the best activities is planned: the Christmas dinner. I arrived on time, and together with a few students, everyone prepared some delicious dishes. Everyone looks their best, we have the best conversations, and everyone has a huge smile on their face all day."

Community

The driving forces behind Summa in de Buurt are project leaders Marloes Rooijackers and Michel Frijters. Together, they ensure that all activities run smoothly. Marloes explains how she started with Summa in de Buurt two years ago and how the initiative has grown into a resounding success. "It's not just about cooking meals; it's about creating a community, reducing social distance, and promoting self-reliance. Most participants tell us that they feel valued and mattered again."

Realistic learning environment

Without students, Christmas dinner would be a complete disaster. They play a crucial role and are involved every step of the way. From recruiting and approaching new participants and devising activities to initiating and maintaining conversations. It's all about connecting, understanding each other, and learning from and with each other.
