From March 4th to 10th, Summa Plus, part of Summa College, is the place to be for anyone looking to take on a challenge: a week without meat. During the national Week Without Meat, twenty to thirty thousand Dutch people will take on the challenge of giving up meat. In an effort to raise awareness about the impact of meat consumption on the environment and health, Summa Plus has created a varied program.

Initiator Mirjam van der Woude, a teacher at Summa Plus, emphasizes the importance of the Week Without Meat: “Eating meat every day is very harmful to the environment. I'm personally very concerned about the environment, and in recent years we've been confronted daily with excessive CO2 emissions and global warming. That really affects me. Doing nothing isn't an option if we want to leave the planet in good condition for future generations. If we all eat a vegetarian curry one day a week, it has a huge impact, and you contribute to a better environment. A meatless day already makes a huge difference.”

Meatless Week at Summa Plus promises to be not only a foodie awareness campaign but also a culinary feast. The cooking classes will passionately focus on preparing delicious meatless dishes. During breaks, students will be tempted with delicious vegetarian spring rolls, encouraging conscious choices. As the icing on the cake, renowned television chef and former Summa College instructor Mounir Toub will lead an inspiring workshop on Tuesday, March 5th, from 13.00:15.00 PM to XNUMX:XNUMX PM.

Vegetable garden on own property

But that's not all! Summa Plus also focuses on sustainability within its own campus. Two years ago, Mirjam and her colleagues created an accessible vegetable garden for students from all Summa Plus programs: the Plustuin. This green oasis not only offers students the opportunity to be active outdoors but also serves as an educational environment. "We want to raise awareness among our students about healthy eating," she emphasizes.

Vegetables as a meat substitute

Mirjam continues: "The Plustuin is a wonderful way to clear your head and learn about vegetable gardening. We have many vegetables that grow and bloom just before and just after summer. The Week Without Meat, in early March, is a great addition to get our students thinking about healthy eating just after winter. The Week Without Meat is a great opportunity to offer various types of vegetables as excellent meat substitutes in an accessible way."
