Reporting sick and leave

As a Summa student, you are required to attend all educational activities. This includes classes, internships, field trips, and exams. Of course, there may be situations where you are truly unable to attend. Below, you can read what to do in such cases.

In case of illness

Unsubscribe before your class, internship, or other educational activity begins. This will often be early in the morning. You have the following options for unsubscribing:

If you are under 18 years old, one of your parents/guardians must unsubscribe you via:

  1. gain parent portal OF
  2. By calling 040 269 40 90 (from 7:30 a.m.). Listen to the recording in its entirety and wait until the connection is disconnected; otherwise, nothing will be recorded.

If you are 18 years or older, you can unsubscribe via:

  1. the Eduarte Student app on your phone OR
  2. My Summa OF
  3. By calling 040 269 40 90 (from 7:30 a.m.). Listen to the recording in its entirety and wait until the connection is disconnected; otherwise, nothing will be recorded.

Reporting your recovery is not necessary unless you are a full-time student doing a block internship. During a block internship, you will remain incorrectly registered as sick until you report your recovery. This can only be done by calling the central number: 040 269 40 90. Reporting your recovery is not necessary for a full-time internship; you will be identified automatically in class.

When visiting the dentist or doctor

Please schedule your dentist or doctor's appointments outside of school hours and internship hours. If there's no other option, please request leave from your career counselor at least two days before your appointment.

Need to see a doctor or dentist urgently? Then cancel your appointment with your career counselor.

Special leave

By special leave we mean:

  • A. Leave in connection with religious obligations or religious holidays;
  • B. Leave due to important circumstances (possibly more than 10 days);
  • C. Leave in connection with holidays outside school holidays.
A. Leave in connection with religious obligations or religious holidays

Sometimes you have obligations to fulfill due to your religion or belief. Summa grants a maximum of one day off per year for this purpose. You must notify your team leader of this at least two days in advance. This must be done in writing. If you are not yet 18, your parent(s)/guardian(s) must do so. You are responsible for catching up on missed educational activities. In this case, overview you will find various religious holidays.

B. Leave due to important circumstances (possibly more than 10 days)

In the event of a move, wedding, anniversary, serious illness, or the death of a blood or related relative, please request special leave from your school team leader. This must be done at least two school days in advance (or, in the case of a serious illness or death of a blood or related relative, no later than two days after the circumstances become known). via this leave application formThe number of days of leave is determined in consultation with your career counselor and/or team leader.

If your leave exceeds 10 school days, the request must be submitted to your program's team leader at least eight weeks in advance. If you are not yet 8, your parent(s)/guardian(s) must request the leave using the form above. If you are 18 or older, you must complete the form yourself. The Compulsory Education Office will decide whether or not to grant the leave and will inform you and your school accordingly.

C. Leave in connection with holidays outside school holidays

Do you want to take a vacation during school hours? This is only possible if you absolutely cannot take a vacation during the school holidays, for example, due to the profession of (one of) your parents/guardians. Your career counselor, in consultation with the principal, may grant you one day off per academic year. You must request this from your career counselor. via this leave application formThis application must be accompanied by a statement from your employer stating the specific nature of the profession and the leave period of the parent/guardian in question.

In addition, the following conditions apply:

  • The application must be submitted to the career counselor at least 8 weeks in advance (unless an explanation is given as to why this was not possible).
  • The leave period lasts a maximum of 10 school days.
  • The leave period does not fall within the first two weeks of the academic year.

Unauthorized absence (truancy)

Unauthorized absence means you're absent without a valid reason, or you haven't deregistered properly or on time. If this happens too often, you'll receive a written warning. It could even lead to you being forced to leave the program under the student statute. If you're still subject to compulsory education, we'll also involve the truancy officer in the event of unauthorised absence.

Notification to the Compulsory Education Office/RMC

Summa is obliged to report absences or dropouts of young people to the Compulsory Education Office or RMC (Regional Reporting and Coordination Point South-East Brabant).

Compulsory education

You are required to attend school until the end of the academic year in which you turn 16, or until you have completed 12 years of education. For example, if you turn 16 in February 2026, you are required to attend school until mid-July 2026, when the summer holidays begin. After that, you are required to meet qualification requirements until you obtain a starting qualification or until your 18th birthday.
