Reporting sick and leave

As a Summa student, you are expected to attend all educational activities. This includes classes, as well as work placements, excursions, and exams. Of course, situations may arise where you genuinely cannot be present. Below, you can read what to do in such cases.

Unsubscribe before your class, internship, or other educational activity begins. This will often be early in the morning. You have the following options for unsubscribing:

If you are under 18 years old, one of your parents/guardians must unsubscribe you via:

2. by calling 040 269 40 90 (from 07:30). Listen to the entire recording and wait until the connection is broken, otherwise nothing has been recorded.

If you are 18 years or older, you can unsubscribe via:

Reporting yourself recovered is not necessary, unless you are a full-time student undertaking a block internship. During a block internship, you remain registered as sick until you report yourself recovered. This recovery can only be done by calling the central number: 040 269 40 90. For a continuous internship, reporting yourself recovered is not necessary; you will automatically be identified in class.

Please schedule your dentist or doctor's appointments outside of school hours and internship hours. If there's no other option, please request leave from your career counselor at least two days before your appointment.

Need to see a doctor or dentist urgently? Then cancel your appointment with your career counselor.

By special leave we mean:

• A. Leave in connection with religious obligations or religious holidays;
• B. Leave due to important circumstances (possibly more than 10 days);
• C. Leave in connection with holidays outside school holidays.

Sometimes you have duties to fulfill due to your religion or life philosophy. Summa grants a maximum of one day off per year for this. You must report this to your team leader at least two days in advance. You must do this in writing. If you are under 18 years of age, your parent(s)/guardian(s) must do so. You are responsible for making up missed educational activities yourself. You will find various religious holidays in this overview .

In the event of a move, a wedding, an anniversary, or serious illness or death of blood relatives or relatives by marriage, you must request special leave from your school's team leader. You must do this at least two school days in advance (in the case of serious illness or death of blood relatives or relatives by marriage, no later than two days after the circumstance becomes known) using this Leave Request Form . The number of leave days will be determined in consultation with your career counselor and/or team leader.

If your leave exceeds 10 school days, the request must be submitted to your program's team leader at least eight weeks in advance. If you are not yet 8, your parent(s)/guardian(s) must request the leave using the form above. If you are 18 or older, you must complete the form yourself. The Compulsory Education Office will decide whether or not to grant the leave and will inform you and your school accordingly.

Do you want to go on holiday during school time? This is only possible if you are genuinely unable to go on holiday during the school holidays. For example, due to the profession of (one of) your parents/guardians. Your career counselor may then grant you leave once per academic year in consultation with the headteacher. You must apply for this with your career counselor using this Leave Application Form . This application must be accompanied by an employer's statement showing the specific nature of the profession and the leave period of the parent/guardian concerned.

In addition, the following conditions apply:

• The application must be submitted to the career counselor at least 8 weeks in advance (unless an explanation is given as to why this was not possible).
• The leave period lasts a maximum of 10 school days.
• The leave period does not fall within the first two weeks of the academic year.

Unauthorized absence means you're absent without a valid reason, or you haven't deregistered properly or on time. If this happens too often, you'll receive a written warning. It could even lead to you being forced to leave the program under the student statute. If you're still subject to compulsory education, we'll also involve the truancy officer in the event of unauthorised absence.

Summa is obliged to report absences or dropouts of young people to the Compulsory Education Office or RMC (Regional Reporting and Coordination Point South-East Brabant).

You are required to attend school until the end of the academic year in which you turn 16, or until you have completed 12 years of education. For example, if you turn 16 in February 2026, you are required to attend school until mid-July 2026, when the summer holidays begin. After that, you are required to meet qualification requirements until you obtain a starting qualification or until your 18th birthday.
