Eindhoven's La Fuente wears Summa designs

The Fountain in Summa

For internationally renowned Eindhoven DJ La Fuente, born Job Smeltzer, style is just as important as music. With his energetic dance moves and striking look, iconic bun, and bold, extravagant outfits, he's a real eye-catcher on stage. While his outfits are normally designed by artist Joshua van Iersel and fashion designer Meegan Denkers of studio Red Bastard, this time Summa students had the opportunity to translate his distinct personality and unique flair into fashion.

Merel Kamp, Rendo Renshoff, Diede Gloudemans, Rizé van Rijswijck, and Lieke Heldens, five Summa students from the Fashion Designer and Product Manager Fashion programs , presented a self-designed pair of trousers and glasses to Eindhoven DJ La Fuente today at Meegan Denkers' studio. In its educational programs, Summa is committed to connecting with the city of Eindhoven and the business community in the Brainport region. This includes the music scene!

Dream project

For Summa's third-year Fashion Designer and Product Manager Fashion students, it was a dream project. They worked in teams to develop a unique collection. The goal? To capture La Fuente's style and translate it into a complete clothing set, consisting of at least five items: a shirt, shorts, a t-shirt, sweatshirt, and socks. The winning team came up with a striking collection that so perfectly matched La Fuente's style that they decided to produce two pieces: trousers and glasses. These glasses were made in Summa's makerspace, a place where the students used advanced tools to produce the glasses according to their own designs. "An extra dimension that makes the collection even more unique," says Van de Laar. "Really cool," Smeltzer says of the trousers and glasses. "I normally wear sets, so a top had to be made for this. The texts on the glasses and trousers also suit me perfectly. Really cool."

Creative playground

The students were tasked with designing a collection for La Fuente that reflected his distinctive character. Two designs from the five best students were put into production and presented to the Eindhoven DJ. This project, initiated by instructor Kim van de Laar of Summa Fashion, combines fashion, art, and music with a local flavor. "A fantastic collaboration and an example for students of how the city can be a creative playground for young talent," emphasizes instructor Kim van de Laar.

Together we can achieve more

She continues: "This is much more than a fashion assignment; it connects students with the city and the creative industry. Eindhoven, known for its design and tech hub, is further put on the map by this collaboration as a city where fashion, art, and music go hand in hand. What better example of "together we can do more?" She adds: "Normally, the students dance to La Fuente's music, but this time he's dancing with their designs."
