Do you want to develop your optician skills as an optician assistant or career changer? This unique program will teach you the tricks of the trade.

You will learn this

You'll learn how to help people see clearly and look their best. You'll learn a lot about the eye (seeing), health, trends, and commerce. You'll also learn all about glasses, contact lenses, eye exams, and spectacles. Because we work in small groups, you'll receive plenty of personal attention.

As an optician, you can progress to branch manager or start your own optician's shop. You can also continue on to a higher professional education program, for example, optometry, orthoptics, or business administration.

The statutory tuition fee for the 2025-2026 school year is €735.

Summa training courses and teaching materials provided by Summa are exempt from VAT. Read more about training costs.

Additional costs

You'll also need a laptop and other course materials. For an estimate of the other costs for this course, please visit mbowebshop.nlEvery year, no later than July 1st, all school fees for the following school year are announced there.

Duration

The program lasts 1,5 to 3 years. Classes are on Mondays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. In addition to 8 hours of class time per week, you should expect to study at home for 15 hours.

Preliminary training

To be able to follow this course, you need:

  • diploma vmbo framework vocational, theoretical or mixed learning pathway or;
  • transition certificate from 3 to 4 havo or vwo or;
  • MBO level 2 or level 3 diploma.
  • You'll also work at least two days a week at an accredited training company. If you don't work for such a company, we'll help you find a suitable training placement. There are many vacancies in the sector!

We will always discuss your situation with you and advise you on whether you have a good chance of successfully completing the course.
