Danisha combines her passions with the combined Nail & Hair Technician training course

July 04, 2025

Danisha van Ewijk (19) was studying to become a Beautician at Summa College when a teacher told her about a new program that would be perfect for her. "During the Beautician program, I could choose between nail and hair styling. They were both such a good fit for me that it was a logical decision for me to make this switch."

Diploma in a maximum of two years

"The Nail & Hair Technician program is a new program," says Danisha. "Many students complete this program in one year. You can take two years, but it's always better to finish quickly. That way, you can continue with another program afterward."

You can't learn everything about nail and hair styling in two years. That's why you start with the 'simple steps.' Think of cutting techniques, highlighting, and dyeing roots. The classes focus primarily on the treatments in highest demand. Once you've mastered the basics, you can choose a follow-up program that goes into more depth.

Practicing on models

You learn the various techniques by doing them. That's why you practice on models during the practical lessons. It's important to know that you're responsible for finding and bringing volunteers. "These are often people from your own community. To avoid always practicing on the same hair and nails, you have to bring different models each period. Otherwise, you can't complete those parts."

Two internships

You'll complete two internships during one academic year. A great way to gain valuable practical experience. Every Thursday, students have the opportunity to intern at a hair salon, as this requires the most hours. Outside of class time, students look for internships to learn more about nail styling.

Most of my classmates found it difficult to find an internship, especially for nails. Luckily, I was able to gain experience with a friend of my mother's. The advantage of this is that I started during the summer holidays. This means I can now focus mainly on the hairdressing part on Thursdays.

Now that the end of her training is in sight, Danischa looks back with pride on where she is. "I'm amazed at how much I've already learned in nail styling. I didn't expect it to go so well so quickly. The same goes for the hairdressing part. It also helps if you genuinely enjoy what you do. Then you learn much faster."

The best part is the combination

Thanks to her combined Nail & Hair Technician training, Danisha has a good idea of what she prefers. Although she especially enjoys the combination. "If I really had to state a preference, I'm leaning more towards hairdressing. But that's mainly because I don't want to just do nails all day. I have that problem with everything, where I can't do just one thing all the time. I really enjoy the variety. That's why I want to combine everything I've learned and eventually start my own beauty salon."
