Medical pedicurist Lillian from Eindhoven has been mentoring interns in Summa's pedicure program for years. "I learn from them too. Plus, they keep me young."

The demand for pedicures is increasing rapidly. Society is aging, the number of diabetes patients is growing, and more and more pedicures are retiring. Lillian, a medical pedicurist in Eindhoven, is therefore happy to promote the program. "I say: choose and go for it. Especially because pedicure is the best profession in the world. You help people, they leave happy, and because most of them come back regularly, you build a bond with each other."

Best education

Lillian helps train new colleagues. In her practice, she has been continuously mentoring interns since 2009. They all come from Summa. "I once had a student from another educational organization, but that wasn't a success. Summa has the best pedicure trainingWhen they come to my practice in Eindhoven, they already have basic knowledge and know how to do things like clip nails. After completing the program, students have a level 4 vocational diploma (MBO level) and the knowledge and skills necessary for the profession. If desired, they can further specialize in oncology pedicure and/or sports pedicure.

Training with attention

Moreover, the support provided by the school is excellent, says Lillian. "The teachers pay attention to the students. They pay attention to them and listen carefully to what's going on. For example, they quickly recognize if someone isn't feeling well. They respond accordingly." The teacher visits Lillian's medical pedicure practice at least twice a year. "We discuss the student's progress and areas for improvement with the student. How is the student enjoying it, how do I feel they're doing? It's a pleasant collaboration. And if I have any questions along the way, I can easily reach the teacher."

Learning from each other

At Lillian's, students not only learn technical aspects of the profession, but also how to communicate effectively with clients and what it means to run your own business. "For example, I point out to them that there are good administrative programs available." Conversely, Lillian learns a thing or two from the students. "The pedicure profession has developed significantly; it's become increasingly professional. Students bring new techniques, sometimes with a different approach. I learn from that. Moreover, the students keep me young. For the time being, I'll continue to work as a medical pedicure intern in Eindhoven."
