Worm hotel in the Plustuin: a teeming paradise for sustainability!

Starting in April, Summa's Plustuin will have some special new residents: thousands of industrious compost worms will be moving into a brand-new worm hotel!

What exactly is a worm hotel? "Imagine a luxurious retreat where compost worms work day and night to transform fruit and vegetable scraps into rich plant nutrients. No room service, just a buffet full of organic waste. This small ecosystem not only reduces waste but also contributes to healthy soil and a greener environment," Mirjam explains proudly.

From waste to gold: worm compost

What was once garden or kitchen waste is transformed by the worms into valuable, vibrant compost. "We use the compost in our Plustuin (Plus Garden) and it contributes to strong plants and biodiversity. It's a wonderful example of how we think and act circularly at Summa. It might sound like a small initiative, but many small things make a big difference," Mirjam emphasizes.

A sustainable future, bite by bite

With the worm hotel, Summa is taking a step toward a more sustainable future. By actively involving students in composting and soil health, they're creating a generation that's more conscious of how they interact with the world. "Who knows, maybe these compost masters will one day breed sustainable thinkers who truly make an impact," laughs Mirjam.

Information board and QR code

Do you have a leftover core or lettuce peel? Don't throw it away, but think of the teeming heroes in the worm hotel! An information board with a QR code will be installed at the Summa Plus Plus Garden at Blecourtstraat 1 in Eindhoven, so everyone can learn more about these composting masters.

This sustainable project is made possible thanks to the Cultural Fund, the IVN Nature Education Fund, sustainability budgets from Summa, and a special donation in honor of the retirement of former chairman Laurent de Vries.
