What subjects do you take to become an optician?
In the Optician program, you'll learn all about glasses and lenses. But what kind of subjects will you take?
Kety is studying to be an optician. After graduation, she plans to attend a university of applied sciences (HBO) to become a contact lens specialist. After completing her current vocational (MBO) program, she will be qualified to sell glasses and fit lenses. After her HBO program, she will also be qualified to fit contact lenses. This is a more precise procedure due to the curvature of the eye. She's already been offered a job at her internship location. She's very happy there and is keen to stay.
At school, she takes courses like Optics (about concave and convex lenses and reflection), Refraction (about the workings of the eye and prescriptions), and Anatomy. The latter also covers topics like diabetes and eye disorders. She also takes more standard subjects like Entrepreneurship, Dutch, English, and Math. What does she particularly enjoy about the program? "Working in the field, the technology and theory, selling, and the variety. Those are things that suit me," says Kety.
Class excursions
She also regularly goes on field trips with her class. For example, to Essilor, the global market leader in eyeglass lenses. They also go to trade fairs, where they have to complete assignments about them. "The class isn't that big," says Kety. "About 20 people. That's nice, because then you get to know everyone."
