Good preparation is half the job

Working in real estate or construction? The Civil Engineering program will lay the foundation for a solid career.

During the Middle Management Construction - Civil Engineering program, you'll develop your skills based on your own interests. Many of our students end up in the following professional fields:

Constructing and realizing buildings

You're someone who enjoys working on construction sites, involved in execution and organization. You have an eye for detail, construction, dimensions, quality, safety, and the environment. This course introduces you to work preparation, including preparing estimates and purchasing materials.

Commercial construction

You'll work in the technical environment of a housing association or property manager. You'll use your construction engineering knowledge to inform clients about structural changes in their buildings. From the construction and real estate sectors, you'll be the key player in buyer support. You'll learn to plan, organize, calculate, and advise during your construction engineering program.

What are you becoming?

As a construction engineer, you can work for various companies involved in the built environment. These companies are often specialized and actively involved in the design, structural engineering, construction, maintenance, and management of buildings.

You could work at an architectural or consultancy firm, a structural engineering firm, a contractor, a real estate agency, a construction company, a project developer, a housing association, or for the government. There, you could become a site manager, technical advisor, estimator, buyer's advisor, work planner, draftsman, or foreman. Further education is also possible, for example, with a higher professional education (HBO) degree in Construction Engineering. Outside of the private sector, you could also work for the government, for example, as an employee in the Department of Building and Housing / Building and Housing Supervision.

This is one of your teachers

Jos Corstjens, lecturer at Summa Construction

I've always worked as a structural engineer in the private sector, drawing and calculating buildings. I now share that knowledge in my classes at Summa Bouw. Think of things like: how heavy can a floor be, how to calculate foundations. Not everyone finds that easy. And it doesn't have to be. I make sure it becomes clear step by step. The best moment? When, after a few lessons, I hear: "Jos, it's all clicked!"

For me, the student is the center of attention. That may sound obvious, but it requires genuine attention and commitment. For me, good education starts with trust. As a student, you must feel safe in my classroom, because only then will you dare to make mistakes and truly develop.

In my class, I have people from all backgrounds and learning styles. This enriches the group, but also requires me to be open and respectful. I strive to build relationships. I don't always succeed with everyone, but I always let them know: I see you, I take you seriously, and you can be who you are. Because I'm also just myself when I'm in front of the class. Besides being a teacher, I'm the father of daughters who are roughly the same age as my students. That helps me better empathize with them.

Many students start here with a dream: to become an architect. My profession may be just one piece of that dream, but it's an important one. Because what you design must truly endure. I love being able to contribute to that. For me, teaching is more than just imparting knowledge; it's also about helping people discover themselves. This is especially important in vocational education. Because if you know where your strengths lie and that you can do it, you'll be stronger for your future. I want that for everyone.

What does your education look like?

The program lasts four years. You'll attend school in the first year, and at the end of the first year, you'll complete an internship. Years two and three also include an internship. In the fourth year, you'll complete a four-day internship and attend school one day a week.

You can find an internship company that best suits your interests. During your studies, you'll connect with many potential employers in the region who can help you further your career.
