Mechanical Engineering Technician (bol)

Knowing how it works and how to make it

As a Mechanical Engineering Technician (WTB), you know how things work and how they can be improved. You design, build, test, and modify things like test setups, auxiliary tools, and prototypes.

As an engineer, you always want to know how things work. After completing your Mechanical Engineering Technician degree, you'll often know how to improve them! You'll design, build, test, and modify test setups, auxiliary tools, and prototypes, for example. You'll also be responsible for performing maintenance tasks. It's a lot of thinking and a lot of hands-on work.

As a Mechanical Engineering engineer, you're a true all-rounder. In addition to subjects like mathematics, physics, Dutch, and English, you'll be taught methods for design, materials science, and CAD design. Every nine weeks, a project focuses on a rotation of key components of the program.

You'll learn a lot about theory, as you need to understand everything. In practical lessons, you'll learn how it works, such as machining (milling and turning). These lessons support the theory. For your final project in year four, you'll create a working prototype from start to finish at your internship company.

What are you becoming?

As a mechanical engineering technician, you can work in a drawing office or production department, preparing or supervising work. For example, at construction companies, equipment manufacturers, or design firms, in mechanical engineering or the manufacturing industry. The Eindhoven region is home to many high-tech companies that manufacture their own products or supply them. These companies have a constant demand for mechanical engineering technicians. You can also continue on to further your education at a university of applied sciences (HBO).

What does your education look like?

You'll start your program with a general foundation year. Therefore, when registering, select 'Engineering Technician.
In this foundation year, you'll explore all areas of engineering. Practical assignments will give you plenty of room to explore and experiment. After the first year, you'll choose the direction that suits you best:

An internship is an important part of your education, which is why you do an internship at a company in all years of study.

Education and Examination Regulations (OER)

The Education and Examination Regulations (OER) of a course specify what you will be doing in which period, how much time is spent on this and an overview of the exams that will be taken. Find the OER for your course here.

Search by your Crebo number (see the box on the right of this page) to view the OER for the current academic year. This will give you a general idea of what's expected of you when you start the program. The OER for the upcoming academic year will be available in July.

Statutory tuition fees

The statutory tuition fee for the 2026-2027 school year is €1.511. Check DUO.nl for possible student financing.

What prior education do you need?

For the vocational training (level 3) and middle management training (level 4) you must meet one of the following conditions:

  • You have a diploma in pre-vocational secondary education (VMBO) with a pre-vocational secondary education (VMBO) track, a theoretical pre-vocational secondary education (VMBO) track, or a mixed pre-vocational secondary education (VMBO) track.
  • You have an (older) diploma from lbo, vbo, mavo or mavo-vbo.
  • You have a basic vocational training diploma (level 2) or a diploma from another vocational training course (level 3).
  • You have proof that you successfully completed the first three years of pre-university or senior general secondary education (havo) or pre-university education (vwo). Or you have another diploma or certificate recognized by the government.

Additionally

Mathematics and physics in your (exam) package are recommended.

Do you have a senior general secondary education (HAVO) diploma? Then you may be eligible to enroll in the second year of the program.

You will be invited for a personal interview or introductory meeting where you will get to know the school and we will see if this course is a good fit for you.
